Sebut saja drama Criminal Minds Korea, Entourage dan Suits. Kini giliran serial sukses asal Inggris, Life on Mars, yang dibuat ulang dengan cita rasa lokal. Stasiun BBC sebagai pihak yang menayangkan versi original dari serial tersebut baru-baru ini bahkan memuji drama Life on Mars versi OCN Korea. “Versi Korea Life on Mars’ memiliki esensi dari versi original, selagi tetap memiliki bakat lokalnya sendiri. Setting cerita sangat Korea, dan periode waktunya juga sangat menarik untuk ditonton,” demikian puji David Bershaw selaku produser drama asing BBC. Drama Korea Life on Mars sendiri bercerita tentang sosok Han Tae Joo diperankan oleh Jung Kyung Ho, seorang polisi ahli forensik yang sedang melakukan penyelidikan sebuah kasus pembunuhan berantai atas permintaan mantan tunangannya yang seorang jaksa, Jeong Seo Hyun diperankan oleh Jeon Hye Bin. Kasusnya sendiri sangat unik, karena pelaku selalu memberi perawatan kuku alias manicure kepada mayat korbannya. Namun karena kekurangan bukti, terdakwa yang bernama Kim Min Seok dinyatakan tidak bersalah dan dibebaskan. Suatu malam Seo Hyun hilang karena menyelidiki lebih lanjut kasus pembunuhan berantai tersebut. Melalui pemeriksaan polisi, terdakwa Min Seok berada di balik hilangnya Seo Hyun. Bersama polisi lainnya, Tae Joo berusaha mengejar Min Seok. Namun yang terjadi Tae Joo ditembak oleh komplotan Min Seok dan bahkan ditabrak mobil. Anehnya, saat terbangun Tae Joo menemukan dirinya hidup di tahun 1988 alias 30 tahun yang lalu. Di antara kebingungannya, Tae Joo dibawa ke kantor kepolisian oleh Lee Yong Gi diperankan oleh Oh Dae Hwan dan Cho Nam Sik diperankan oleh Noh Jong Hyun karena dianggap mencurigakan dan tidak mau mengungkapkan identitas secara jujur. Tae Joo juga membuat Kapten Kang Dong Sheol diperankan oleh Park Sung Woong salah paham, mengira Tae Joo adalah buronan. Berkat dokumen-dokumen yang dimiliki Tae Joo di dalam sakunya, barulah ketiganya sadar bahwa Tae Joo juga merupakan seorang polisi dengan level inspektur. Meski bingung dengan perjalanan ke masa lalu yang dialaminya, Tae Joo berusaha menjalankan pekerjaannya. Saat itulah ia menemukan modus pembunuhan yang pelakunya memberi perawatan kuku kepada korbannya baru saja dimulai. Namun investigasi pada periode tahun 80-an masih sangat sulit. Saat itu belum ada CCTV, data kasus masih dibuat secara manual dengan mesin tik dan tes DNA harus dikirim ke Amerika sebelum menerima hasilnya yang makan waktu 3-4 bulan. Tae Joo yang terbiasa mengandalkan bukti-bukti konkret dengan memanfaatkan kemajuan teknologi dalam menyelesaikan kasusnya jelas merasa terhambat dengan sistem kerja seperti itu. Belum lagi dengan kebiasaan Kapten Kang Dong Sheol yang justru lebih mementingkan intuisinya sebagai polisi, alih-alih barang bukti. Pada masa itu Tae Joo juga melihat peran polisi wanita masih disepelekan. Ketimbang menyelidiki kasus, Opsir Yoon Na Young diperankan oleh Go Ah Sung justru sibuk membuat kopi dan membersihkan meja para polisi. Dengan keterbatasan teknologi pada masa itu, dapatkah Tae Joo membongkar kasus pembunuhan berantai yang ditanganinya? Apakah sebenarnya tujuan Tae Joo “dikembalikan” ke masa lampau? Mengapa pula ia kerap mendengar suara-suara dari masa depan? Apakah perjalanan lintas waktu yang dialaminya sungguhan terjadi atau hanya mimpi belaka? Story 10 Acting/Cast 10 Music Rewatch Value 10 This is a stunning, well balanced drama that stands alone despite being a remake. A thoughtfully crafted blend of drama, comedy, and subtle sci fi, I was hooked on Life on Mars from the very beginning, and it didn't let me love that the story gives you bits and pieces of the puzzle as it goes along, but keeps you guessing in a way that's fun rather than frustrating. The puzzle itself is such an interesting concept, managing to incorporate sci fi elements without getting too gimmicky. But the very best thing about Life On Mars is the changing relationships between the characters. It's so enjoyable to watch Han Tae Joo unraveling the trauma and isolation of his past, and learning how to connect with these people from whom he's supposed to be literally worlds apart. And the characters themselves are so infused with heart and humor, the perfect antithesis to the coldly rational mindset that he started with. It's so easy to fall in love with this little found Kyung Ho is amazing. He has been amazing, and he will continue to be amazing, and I don't think I could possibly love him more. I saw someone mention in another review that Life On Mars gave him the opportunity to showcase the more subtle sides of his acting skills, and I couldn't agree more. Han Tae Joo's quiet desperation is so palpable and relatable, despite the muted nature of the character. And rooting for him to finally come out of that shell is so fulfilling!The dynamic between Han Tae Joo and Kang Dong Cheol is definitely a highlight of the show. Park Sung Woong is such a strong actor, and seems just so genuinely FUN. He is able to traverse between the character's comic antics and the more serious moments with such effortlessness. The growing relationship between the two characters is so pure. Special mention of course for Go Ah Sung as Yoon Na Yeong. I think I might have fallen in love with her a little bit. The character is so different from the roles she's played before, but this soft-spoken tether that anchors Han Tae Joo to his reality and just kicks ass all around, honestly is even alone worth the price of admission on this drama, if you ask score was appropriate and for the most part managed to support the story without drawing too much attention to itself. I loved the 80s songs that were sprinkled in, especially when the characters were rocking out or dancing along to them!CINEMATOGRAPHYThoughtfully done! I don't want to give anything away, but the cinematography clearly reflects what's happening in the story, sometimes in ways that are subtle. And I love that. Watch for differences in the cinematography, and you can figure out what is signified in the plot. It shows how much care has gone into even the smallest details that most viewers won't even consciously VALUEI typically don't rewatch dramas, but this could very likely be an exception. Now that I've seen the end, I want to go back and see which pieces of the puzzle I may have missed the first time around. Not to mention, I'm not quite ready to say goodbye to these characters...OVERALLHighly, highly recommend that anyone give this drama a shot. It's not a perfect fit in any single genre, so I would be cautious of letting any genre bias discourage you from watching this.
